President Anita White's Year End Summary

My 2007/2008 year as President of South Hills Kiwanis has been most memorable and satisfYing. We accomplished many of our goals and enjoyed the process.

Our Kowchip bingo fundraiser earned money for our Memorial Fund, but more importantly, it drew youngsters from our High School friends who helped on that day. We enjoyed the company and the muscle from Key Clubbers from Charter Oak High and South Hills High, as well as the Future Farmers of America at Covina High School. The FF A raises the cows used for the event, and during the day, they keep these participants on course, or rather, on the playing field.

The Pancake Breakfast again brought together our High Schoolers whose help was invaluable in setting up and maintaining services and supplies during the day. Again, we enjoyed the company and the efforts of our two Key Club groups. The event was a success and our members survived the day.

The other source of income, actually our largest source of income for the year was the Concert Under the Stars event underwritten by the Herb Half Foundation. Club members bought and sold tickets for this Musical evening and it has become our most successful and favorite way of earning Memorial Funds. No physical labor involved and no overhead makes it a winner. Our thanks to Immediate Past President, Joel Beezy, for bringing this great opportunity to us.

Through the efforts of our members, we have supported causes on National and International levels through the bigger Kiwanis picture. The bulk of our charitable giving, however, is on a local level, the Covina Library, the Covina Parks and Recreation Department, Covina Concert Band, Meals on Wheels, as well as local youth sports programs.

Our Lieutenant Governor, and Club member, Dr Mike Tanaka, recruited members and spouses to assist in dental screenings for young school children. His Dental Association provides the service for free.

The highlight of my year, so far, has been inducting a new member, Carol Scanlan, whose sponsor was Dr Mike Tanaka. She is all that we could ask for in a Kiwanian. We are very fortunate to have her in our ranks.

Normally when one assumes a leadership role in an organization, a year seems to last forever. As I look back on my term in office, one thought enters my mind---where did the time go? I now look forward to another year in South Hills Kiwanis with PresidentElect, Don Andrews at the helm. He and all of his Board Members and Committee Members will assure that next year will be awesome.
