Club Bulletin

South Hills Kiwanis Weekly Bulletin -- March 29, 2007
Reporter: Tanaka

The Patriotic Song: Elton Chatfield and Gloria Freet led us in singing "God Bless America".

The Pledge: Mike Tanaka.

The Invocation: Jack Fielding

The Thought for the Day: George Bishop favored us with:
"There are three kinds of people.
Those who make things happen.
Those who watch what happens.
And those who say, "What happened?"

Entree of the Day: Chicken Breast Salad, tomato juice, apple pie.

Guests: Richard Rodriguez is a Internet advertiser. He is scheduled to be a future program, for SHK.

Mordoff "Mystery Box" Auction. Two boxes of trash container liners were auctioned with much zeal. The first box was sold to Dr. Chatfield for $7.00. And a minute later the second box was sold to Anita White for $10.00. Is that inflation or what?

Announcements:

  1. Kiwanis One Day is starting Monday April 2, 2007. Our SHK Project calls for SHK members and spouses to be recorders during the dental screening of West Covina Unified School District's kindergartner children. An estimated 620 children of the district's nine elementary schools will have their teeth examined by volunteer dentists of the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. This project is in response to the new California State mandate that all kindergartner-age children have their teeth examined by a dentist before enrolling in school, Examinations will take place over a five mornings in April.
Our SHK representatives are: Margie Mordoff and Margaret Chatfield (April 2nd), Harry and Jan Anderson (April 9), Dan Andrews and Cookie Ford (April 23rd ), Elton Chatfield and. Irene Parker (April 27th), and Harry and Jan Anderson (April 30th).
  2. SAVE THE DATE I: SHK Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, May 11th at the Covina Bowl. Tim Burlingame of the Sonrise Christian School will be the Key Note Speaker. Remember to invite your family and friends.
  3. SAVE THE DATE II. SHK Pancake Breakfast will be on Sat. June 9th at the Civic Center Park by the Police Station. Sell those tickets.

Fines:

1. Former Covina Fire Chief Carl Johnson had much to celebrate. A wedding anniversary in January, a birthday in February, and a new truck in March. All three kudos, plus the Club singing the "Happy Birthday" song cost $50.00!

Drawing: Lucky Tom Palmeri had the winning ticket; but did not draw the Ace of Spades!

Program: President-elect Anita White introduced Barbara Benedict and Gina Picarella from the Magan Medical Center of Covina. Barbara spoke on the NEW and IMPROVED Magan Clinic. New doctors have recently joined their staff to treat and counsel their patients about flu shots, diabetes, and cosmetics with lasers and many other new topics. They have begun using "paperless" electronic medical records, thus reducing the need to store paper records. Digital radiographs have made viewing and diagnosis almost immediate, as testified by McAlpin's recent visit to Magan! Very good program! Thanks Anita.
