SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 1/14/10

Inspired by the beautiful singing of the Lady at the Rose Bowl game, MAC MC ALPIN led the group in the singing of"America", and surprisingly the group did very well, and was actually easier to sing than the National Anthem. We will probably be singing that song more often.

GEORGE BISHOP, who wanted to lead the Canadian salute to the flag, after a bunch of groans, led the Pledge to Old Glory. DON ANDREWS gave the Invocation, and TEX WILLIAMS' Thought For the Day;
The response in time of war is staggering, but we love our freedom,
and we know Freedom is never free.- Author unknown.

The Citizen of the Year for Covina - Our own GEORGE BISHOP - Dinner will be held at the South Hills Country Club on January 28, 2010. Call ANITA WHITE for Chamber of Commerce tickets. It seems to me that our COOKIE CUTTER should be levying some healthy assessments on our honored member. I have been in this club for more than 50 years, and I cannot remember anyone else who received this prestigious award. Mercy Me!!

Due to a physical emergency, it was necessary to leave the room for a short while, and the honored one took some notes on the fines- without much explanation - but Dr. TANAKA came in late wearing the No Fine Badge - so no revenue there --- ELTON CHATFIELD donated $5.00, and TOM PALMERI paid $5.00 for something - STEVE SHERMAN was Mister K, and was supposed to fink on anyone who did not shake his hand - No Takers.

BABE FIELDING has been moved to the Clara Baldwin rest home on Valinda.

We had a lady speaker today, who had no name, or if she did, no one told me who she was, and she spoke on and showed some slides on California Missions. The California missions were started about 1769, because the Spanish king wanted to create more permanent settlements in the New World. The first mission was in San Diego, and explorer Gaspar de Portola and Father Juniper Serra made their first expedition to establish the California Missions. Over a period of 54 years, 21 California Missions were established spanning 650 miles from San Diego to modern day Sonoma. The Spanish Fathers major purpose was to convert the local Indians to Christianity, but the Spanish Mission system was not always kind to the Indians, and some of the Indians were treated badly. In 1834, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and the Missions went through a period of secularization and trials and tribulations. In 1863,President Abraham Lincoln returned the missions to the Catholic church, but by that time many of the Missions were in ruins. In the 20 th century, many of the missions were restored or rebuilt. Most of them are active parish churches today.
