SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 1/17/08
The meeting was called to order by PRES. ANITA WHITE, who prevailed upon VJ MAC and GLORIA to lead the group in the singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". COOKIE led the Pledge and REV. JAMES PARKER gave an inspiring invocation.
The Thoughts for the day:
"Wise men talk because they have something to say. Fools talk because they have to say something". - Plato
"Tex" gave me two, but I lost the one from Anne Frank, but I remember that she said "God blesses us every day".
Guest: We had 12 guests in all: COOKIE had two guests; GEORGE BISHOP had IRIS plus two more; JOEL BEEZY had a guest, who is a member of the HAFIF FOUNDATION; MIKE TANAKA had two guests; ELTON CHATFIELD had one guest; there two KEY CLUB members from Charter Oak Key Club, and two members from the SOUTH HILLS KEY CLUB.
LT. GOVERNOR MIKE TANAKA gave a history of Kiwanis International, and said that Kiwanis was started in 1915, and now there are 600,000 members in 16,000 clubs spread over 96 countries in the world. Our club is a part of Div. 35, which is a part of the CA-NEV-HA DISTRICT, which has a total of 42 divisions in the district. Gov. OSCAR KNIGHT will visit our Division on 2/07/08, and we are the Host Club. Ya' All Come!! Seriously, we need members of our club to attend at 6:00 P.M. At the Monrovian Restaurant in Monrovia.
JOHN MORDOFF gave a brief history of South Hills Kiwanis, which was formed in 1954, and John became a member the next year. Our club gained some reknown when we had the Variety Show, but it was a tremendous amount of work and effort, but a lot of fun and pride. South Hills has sponsored three other clubs, West Covina, Baldwin Park, and Charter Oak, and we have sponsored three Key Clubs.
DON ANDREWS spoke on some of our projects, which includes the FFA, Meals on Wheels, Children's Hospital; 375 students were guests of the DONALD STERLING FOUNDATION who supplied the tickets to see a Clipper Game, and the HAFIF FOUNDATION and JOEL BEEZY furnished the bus for their transportation to the game'
A check was presented to the Charter Oak Key Club from the Hafif Foundation. McALPIN won the pot of $4.00, and JOEL BEEZY joined the CENTURY CLUB last week by donated $100 for his new car.
