SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS CLUB WEEKLY BULLETIN
Date: January 21, 2010
Reporters: V.J. McAlpin/ G. Bishop

Song was lead by V.J. (who else)
Pledge: Harry Anderson
Thought for the day: Tex Williams "If Ifs and Buts were Fruits
and Nuts, what a wonderful Christmas it would be" by
Papa Brown.
Invocation: Don Andrews.
Lunch was served; Spaggetti with sauce.
We had no guests today.
Joel Beezy gave his report on the successful Clipper basketball
game last night. In spite of the rainstorm here in the San
Gabriel Valley, we had a good turnout to see the Clippers win
the game over the Chicago Bulls. The rain had stopped by the
time the game started so no problems with the weather.
FINES: Anita paid $5.00 for missing the Spiritual Aims
meeting at Jim Parker's office on Tuesday. Elton and John
Mordoff also missed because they were not called they said.
Anita paid $10. HAPPY Dollars because her doctor informed
her that her tests revealed no signs of cancer.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Babe Fielding is back in Inter
Community because of complications. Steve Sherman's
wife, Renee, was in the hospital for an angioplasty and we are
happy to inform that all went well.
Ken Miller is in Inter Community for some tests. He is in room
267, Bed #1. Should be O.K. when the tests are finished. I
think it had something to do with reprogramming his heart
monitor, That's all for announcements.
SPEAKER: Today was Josh Canales who was a young pro.
Baseball player who is now associated with "Fellowship of
Christian Athletes" His father who was athletically inclined
recognized his ability when he was a youngster and encouraged
him so that when he graduated from High School he was
drafted by Oakland A's. But he went to Florida State on a
scholarship. He returned to West Coast to U.C.L.A. and was
drafted by the Dodgers. He was in the minors for 3 years until
he associated himselfwith the F.C.A. and retired from
baseball. He married when at U.C.L.A and now has 2 children.
2006 was a good year -- He bought his first home, had his first
child and his first job. The F.C.A concentrates on the young
students - not necessarily anthletes - to assure that they will
remain morally straight. They have about 50 clubs in the Los
Angeles area now. Another F.C.A. member Chris Rix joined
him late after the meeting and several of us discussed how we
could help the F.C.A. A good program and we will expect to
see more of tbese young men again. The email address for the
F.C.A. is (www.fcala.com).
