SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 10/6/11
VJ MAC led the singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". BILL MATTHEWS then led the
Salute to the Flag. TEX WILLIAMS' Thought For The Day was a quote from the First
President of the United States, who said:
"It is the duty of all Americans to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God,
and to obey his will."
The new President of South Hills Kiwanis appointed COOKIE FORD as the Keeper of
the President's Bell. What happens when someone steals it from COOKIE remains to
be seen, but there are some members who have reputation of being a bell-stealer.
COMING EVENTS:
NEXT THURSDAY IS THE FIRST BOARD MEETING OF THE NEW PREZ.
EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND. THE ANNUAL BUDGET WILL BE
DISCUSSED AMONG OTHER THINGS.
The Past Prez. Will Not Be Present Next Week, because he is in Hawaii.
FINES, and Stuff:
MIKE TANAKA and JOEL BEEZY (who else) were both a wee bit late, and MIKE
paid $5.00 for his tardiness, but JOEL only had $1.00 to contribute.
KEN MILLER paid $21.00 because his child's bride had a 21st birthday???? Thank you
KEN. CAROL and BUTCH SCANLAN have just returned from a lovely trip to Rome,
Florence and Venice. They even visited the Vatican, but I don't think they saw the Pope.
CAROL contributed $50.00 for that little journey, but got $9.00 of it back when she won the pot.
JULIE and JESSICA PRENDICE were the guest speakers, who spoke about Hope For SMA.
SMA is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is a genetic disease that attacks nerve cells called
neurons in the spinal cord. These neurons communicate with your voluntary muscles that you
control, like in your arms and legs. This can affect walking, crawling, breathing, swallowing
and head and neck control.
SMA runs in families. Parents usually have no symptoms, but still carry the gene. There
are many types of SMA, and life expectancy depends on the type you have and how it affects
your breathing. There is no cure, but medicines and physical therapy help treat the symptons.
Type 1 SMA infants require a feeding tube, suction machine, breathing support and
ventilator 24 hours a day. Parents are told: "Your child will not live to see the age of two. Take
her home and love her. There is no known treatment or cure, but there is Hope on the horizon.
Editor's Note: The money spent in Aphganistan and Iraq would be better spent on things like
CANCER, SMA and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) -Lou Gehrig's disease.
Mr. President, Pull the troops.
