SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 11/19/09
Rumor has it that a bunch of Kiwanis members were out playing Cow-Pasture Pool today. However, I did not know that President COOKIE or VICE-PRES. ANITA WHITE spent any of their spare time involved in such a frustrating past-time. On the other hand, ELTON CHATFIELD and RUNT (GEORGE) BISHOP have been known to actually engage in that old ScottishlEnglish past-time of chasing a little white ball around mounds of dirt and sand with the hopes of knocking it in small holes with odd looking weapons.
In any event, CAROL SCANLAN took over the meeting, and even without a bell or gavel persuaded MAC MC ALPIN to lead a song, and MAC chose "GOD BLESS AMERICA". SOME ONE led the Pledge, and I think BILL MATTHEWS gave the invocation. This senile old man did not have any paper to write on to begin with, and forgot who actually participated in these important things. TEX WILLIAMS did have a Thought for the Day, and state that Lee Adams said:
"Laughter is like changing diapers- nothing permanent, but a great
short term solution."
Next Thursday is dark because of Thanksgiving. See insert.

Hacienda Heights had an interclub consisting of PAUL WHITE and VERN MOYER, and the guest speaker was PHIL HUISMAN, a Glendora Kiwanian, and it was a pleasure to have Past President ERNIE AL TV ATER, who brought a present for Prez. COOKIE, but she was not here to receive it. Maybe she might get it at the next meeting if she has an appropriate stipend.
Interim ChairmanlPresident CAROL pulled out some assessments to help the kitty: JOEL BEEZY paid $1.00 (that is all he could afford); Guest Paul White donated $2.00; KEN MILLER gave $10.00 of happy money, because his daughter had to be taken to emergency medical care for a possible heart attack, but it was only the flu; CAROL SCANLON donated $20.00 happy dollars, to celebrate her grandmother's 91st birthday;
DR. MIKE TANAKA gave $10.00 of sad money for the sad football game of USC; MAC MC ALPIN gave $20.00 happy dollars for INEZ'S clean bill of health, and to pray for his daughter-in-law, CARMINA'S bout with breast cancer.
KEN MILLER won the pot - again - with a seven - but donated it back.
MIKE TANAKA introduced PHIL HUISMAN OF SHEPHERD'S PANTRY, which is a group of volunteers that started a program in 2004 to provide food and financial donations from various sources. The volunteers deliver food, clothing and money to low income residents in local communities. They opened a walk-in facility on Arrow Highway in 2006, and the facility has expanded from 1200 square feet to 4600 square feet. They now have about 60 volunteer workers, and they need financial assistance, food and clothing donations, and Publicity. It sounds like a great project.
