Club Bulletin
SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 11/05/09
PRESIDENT COOKIE FORD prevailed upon this reporter to open the meeting
with the singing of the patriotic song, "GOD BLESS AMERICA". Then CAROL
SCANLAN led the Pledge to the Flag. TOM PALMERI gave the invocation, and
TEX WILLIAMS' Thought For the Day:
A disappointed woman says that a man's character is like a fence -
all
the whitewash in the world will not strengthen it.
It is with great sorrow that we must inform everyone that JACK BARROWS has
passed away. JACK was the last charter member who was still considered a member
of SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS. JACK was the first Secretary of SHK, and was a
member of the House Committee for many years. He was a "Dancing Fool" for many
years, and would always dance with the pretty ladies in the club. His wife BETTY
passed away a few years ago. An old Kiwanis Bulletin is enclosed.
There was an Interclub with the Glendora Kiwanis Club today, but I was only able to
get one name out of the four, and that was TONY MILLER. BOB EBINER was also a
guest today, and the Speaker, LUIZ GUITTEREZ also had two guests.
DR. MIKE TANAKA took advantage of the NO FINE BADGE, and informed the club
that he had been elected President of the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society which has
about 900 dentists as members (if I got anything wrong, Mike will pay my fine next
week).
ELTON CHATFIELD has finally returned from a month's stay in Hawaii, and claimed
that he had no money after such a long vacation, but he finall came up with a Century
Note after JOYCE CHAPMAN layed out $45.00 in cash PLUS another $100, because
they named a building after her at the Chapman University. STEVE SHERMAN just
got back from a cruise, and he also gave a sob story about his wife losing Thousands of
dollars gambling on the ship, but he dug up $25.00. The wimpy President Cookie fined
everyone who could not produc evidence of voting $3.00, but VJ MAC, although guilty
himself, said everyone should pay $5.00 for missing such an important election, and he
paid $5.00. ANITA WHITE paid $3.00.
ANITA also won a "Raffle" which Cookie auctioned off. I think the pretty sack had
candy in it. Then ANITA introduced LUIZ GUTIERREZ (SP), a member of the
Monrovia Kiwanis Club, who said he was a high school drop-out, and had done all
the things like drugs, gangs, etc. He said he believed he had a purpose in life and that
there was a purpose in life with a lot of potential outside of Kiwanis clubs, and that we
should work to make a better community by developing a comprehensive plan. He was
a good speaker, who could make a good minister.
