ELTON introduced MARY TODD LINCOLN (portrayed by Jackie Murashie from Covina), who was dressed for FORD's Theatre.
MARY was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1818. From her father and step-mother, she
had 15 siblings. She moved to Springfield, Illinois, where she was courted by both Stephen
Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Abe won out and married Mary in 1842. They had four
sons, but all but one of them died before their mother, who died at 63 in 1882. Robert
Todd Lincoln lived until 1926. Mary returned to Illinois after Abe died. Mary had some
physical and mental problems, and was actually committed to Bellevue Place for a short
period of time. She spent several years abroad, and received a pension for being the widow
of President Lincoln in the amount of $3000.00 per year.
Mary's final years were marked with declining health problems, and she suffered
several falls and injured her spine in a fall from a step-ladder. She is buried in the
Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield along with her husband.
