SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 3/27/08

GLORIA FREET accompanied VJ MAC, who led the singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA", followed by CAROL SCANLON leading the PLEDGE TO THE FLAG. TEX WILLIAMS quoted SATCHEL PAGE, who said " DON'T PRAY WHEN IT RAINS, IF YOU DON'T PRAY WHEN THE SUN SHINES". BILL MATTHEWS gave the invocation.

TEX just got out of that "hotel" run by KAISER in Baldwin Park for a kidney problem amongst other things. There must be a lot of people praying for TEX, and CARL JOHNSON was chauffeured by JOHN MORDOFF, who brought CARL to the meeting. CARL took another nose-dive and dinged up his face, but he finally consented to use a walker, which will help.

COMING EVENTS: 3/30/08 - 1:00 TO 3:00 p. m.- ALTVATER HOUSE, 412 West Aster St., Upland, Ca. 909-985-0113, Drop-In Open House for the Girl Scout Memorabilia collection. All South Hills Kiwanis members are invited. Girl Scout cookies will be served.

INTERCLUBS: The interclub scheduled for the Arcadia Club has been cancelled, BUT there is an interclub with Duarte on Tuesday, 4/15/08 at 12:00 P. M., to be held at the Westminster Gardens, 1420 Santo Domingo, Duarte.

GUESTS INCLUDED: An Interclub with LaPuente-Industry Club, or was it the Hacienda Heights Club? But anyway, NANCY BEGG, PAUL WHITE, VERN MOYER AND CHARLES KARSCH comprised a full interclub, and PAUL gave a Pitch about the floating duck project - fund raiser, which some lucky person, whose duck floats over the finish line first will win one Million dollars.

We also had three members of the Covina Fire Department, and a Capt. Davis spoke bout things we should do to make our homes more safe; and learn how to shut off the gas; check smoke detectors; replenish or replace fire-extinguishers. (See the enclosed flyer).

MIKE TANAKA thanked JANET AND HARRY ANDERSON, DON ANDREWS, IRIS BISHOP, ELTON AND MARGARET CHATFIELD, COOKIE FORD AND CAROL SCANLON for helping out with the Dental Screening project. About 1100 kids were screened. Thanks to Mike and all of the helpers.

FINES INCLUDED: PRES. ANITA, who donated $25.00 for missing last week and JAY feeling better; MIKE TANAKA gave $20.00 for the help given by those listed above; GEORGE BISHOP missed last week and lost money playing golf, and was only able to fork over $2.00, but ELTON CHATFIELD won money and gave up $20.00; JOYCE CHAPMAN donated $5.00 in honor of the three firemen; JOHN MORDOFF paid $25.00 for his new badge, which says "Retired Bad Man"; COOKIE FORD made some contribution, but I am not sure what it was.

KEN MILLER won the pot and $4.00 in absentia (he left early).

MIKE TANAKA stated the club made about $100.00 from the See's Candy sale ( he gets his name in here a lot- maybe it's because he does so much).

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF OUR SPEAKERS - - AND THE PRESIDENT AND STOP THE LOUD NOISES AND CHIT-CHAT. THANK YOU!!
