SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN 7/16/09
The meeting was opened with MAC MC ALPIN leading the singing of "GOD BLESS
AMERICA". KEN MILLER led the Pledge to the Flag, and JACK FIELDING gave
the Invocation.
TEX WILLIAMS' Thought for the day:
" Think like a man of action, but act like a man of thinking."
GUESTS included: MELISSA DRIFTMIER, MARILYN DRIFTMIER, and
GUSTAVO GONZALES (?).
Announcements: ANITA WHITE said that JAY had a stroke, but is home and is now
recovering. DON ANDREWS said that BESSIE is either home or on the way home from
the hospital. CARL JOHNSON is still in the convalescent home located at 1740 Via Verde.
COMING EVENTS:
7/23/09 - South Hills Kiwanis Barbeque - Covina Park - 6:00 P.M. - you can
bring a side-dish if you want to do so, but it is not necessary. Come one - come all.
7/25/09 - 8/1/09 - 8/5/09 - Concert Under the Stars - See Joel Beezy
8/14/09 - Date Night - Red Devil Pizza - Then Covina Performing Arts
9/25/09 - SOUTH HILLS KIWANIS Installation - @ South Hills Country Club
FINES; ANITA WHITE paid $5.00 for missing the Board meeting, and she had the Fine
Free Badge. KEN MILLER and MONTY just celebrated their 54th Anniversary. Ken
donated $20.00; BILL MATTHEWS missed the Board meeting, and paid $5.00. MAC
MC ALPIN paid a double tithe of $10.00 for drawing the black ace last week. JOEL
BEEZY whined and cried because he had to give up his last $2.00 (for being noisy);
Carol Scanlon paid $10.00 to celebrate her father's 92 nd birthday. CAROL also won
the weekly drawing, and drew an ace, and donated it back.
MELISSA DRIFTMEIR, a soft-spoken young lady, talked about CASA COLINA,
a Rehab Center that was started in 1936 by Frances "Mother" Smith to help children
with polio, It has grown to a full staffed rehab hospital with highly specialized programs
and services. Many of our members can recall that former member, Bob Duncan, was
treated at Casa Colina some years ago when he was unexpectedly struck with a serious
nerve and muscle disease.
